Through a generous gift of S$220,000 from Temasek Foundation to the Centre for English Language Communication (CELC) at NUS, an English academic writing project was launched in Vientiane, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR), on 11 January 2011.

Marking the launch was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by Assoc Prof Wu Siew Mei, Director of CELC and Dr Mithong Souvanvixay, Director-General of the Department of Teacher Education, Lao Ministry of Education. The signing was witnessed by Mr Benjamin William, Singapore's Ambassador to Lao PDR; H E Mme Sengdeuane Lachanthaboune, Vice Minister of Education, Lao PDR; Mr Benedict Cheong, Chief Executive Officer of Temasek Foundation; and Prof Tan Tai Yong, Vice Provost (Student Life), NUS.

The 15-month project comprises a series of workshops, as well as co-teaching, observation and consultation sessions between the Lao teacher trainers and lecturers from the CELC. This will lead to a revamp of current practice and curriculum in the teaching and testing of academic writing in teacher training colleges, as well as the establishment of a formal training framework.

NUS Vice Provost (Student Life) Prof Tan Tai Yong said: "In line with its aim to be a leading international centre for the teaching of English language skills, I am confident that the NUS CELC, in collaboration with our Lao counterparts, will be able to contribute to the development of a training framework for the teaching and assessment of academic writing, that can be applied in teacher training colleges across the country."
