INAUGURAL U@LIVE FORUM: Moderator of the dialogue session Mr Viswa Sadasivan with Guest Speaker Dr Noeleen Heyzer

On 27 January 2011, NUS launched U@live (pronounced “U-alive”), a special monthly forum featuring outstanding members of the NUS community who have been indefatigable in championing causes that make a difference to the world we live in.

For the inaugural forum, NUS was privileged to have its alumna Dr Noeleen Heyzer, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), as Guest Speaker. Dr Heyzer spoke on the topic, “Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear – Working from the Principles of the United Nations”. She shared briefly about her work with the United Nations and what drove to pursue the causes she did.

She also fielded many questions from the audience covering a variety of topics such as the Millennium Development Goals, reform of global governance and successful delivery of aid to its intended recipients. Among the views she shared, she also noted that though people were getting more connected in the world today, some did not enjoy such access to the global community due to disparities that yet existed, which needed to be addressed through core values such as justice and fairness.

The forum, which was webcasted live, was moderated by Nominated Member of the Singapore Parliament and NUS alumnus Mr Viswa Sadasivan, who also chairs the U@live organising committee. While the forum involved a live audience, online audiences also participated in the discussion through real time comments and questions posted from platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and MSN messenger.

Initiated by the NUS Alumni Advisory Board, U@live was jointly organised by alumni and the Office of Alumni Relations.
