The event saw more than 300 academic leaders and delegates from leading universities and academic institutions across the globe, including 34 APRU member universities in Asia, Australasia, North and South America. In all, 29 APRU presidents attended the meeting which featured an address at the Great Hall of the People by President Hu Jintao, one of many prominent Tsinghua University alumni.

Discussions at the joint event centred around the theme, "Global Socioeconomic Development and Higher Education" which provided the presidents with the opportunity to examine a multitude of factors critical to the future development of universities and their role in social and economic development. At the breakout discussion, Prof Tan spoke of the NUS administrative model on university governance and its approach to balancing autonomy and accountability in order to address various challenges in university administration.

Established in 1997, APRU is a consortium of 42 leading research universities in the Pacific Rim. Prof Tan is a member the APRU Steering Committee which provides leadership for the association.
