Tan Chorh Chuan participates in Global Colloquium of University Presidents

NUS President Prof Tan Chorh Chuan was among a select group of 29 university presidents from all over the world who attended the fifth annual meeting of the Global Colloquium of University Presidents from 4 to 5 April 2011. Held at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), Philadelphia, United States, the Colloquium was chaired by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and hosted by Penn President Prof Amy Gutmann.

Sponsored by five leading American universities - Columbia University, New York University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University, the Colloquium is an annual meeting of university presidents invited for discussion on a topic of critical and timely interest to the UN Secretary-General and the international community.

The topic this year was "Empowering Women to Change the World: What the UN and Universities Can Do". In addition to Mr Ban Ki-moon, the meeting featured two other keynote speakers, Ms Michelle Bachelet and Ms Valerie Jarrett, who are experts on women's issues.

Ms Bachelet, former President of Chile (2006-2010), is now the Under-Secretary-General of the UN and Executive Director of UN Women. Ms Valerie Jarrett is a Senior Advisor to US President Barack Obama and Chair of the White House Council on Women and Girls.
