Highlighting these individuals as inspiring examples of resolute commitment and achievement of excellence, NUS President Prof Tan Chorh Chuan said at the awards ceremony that "they are challenging us through their example, to constantly push to excel beyond ourselves and others. They shine because of their individual talent and determination. But they also remind us how vital it is to have an environment and culture that fiercely values excellence, that always strives to be self-surpassing."

For NUS to build such a culture of excellence, to create real impact and value, he said it will require the collective impulse and collaborative effort of the NUS community to make the University a transformative place for its people, and a leading global university centred in Asia.

In this respect, special mention was due to the two distinguished Outstanding Service Award recipients for their significant contributions to NUS. Prof Tan said former NUS President Prof Shih Choon Fong, who helmed the University from 2000 to 2008, had led NUS on a remarkable path of surpassing itself and that "under his leadership, NUS made great strides forward to become a well-respected global university."

As for Mr Tony Chew, Prof Tan said as Chairman of Duke-NUS, he had "set new benchmarks in visionary leadership and commitment" and "his leadership has helped the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School gain a strong reputation for excellence and innovation in the short time since it was started."
