Carl Zeiss, a leader in the optical and opto-electronic industries, inked a Memorandum of Understanding with NUS on 13 May 2011 to establish the Carl Zeiss Innovation Laboratory. This collaboration will foster greater knowledge exchange between NUS staff and Zeiss researchers, application specialists and engineers in advanced imaging and sample preparation, and increase networking opportunities among the two communities. There are also plans for joint research projects in the area of nanoscale imaging and patterning as well as other disciplines of mutual interest.

This is the first-of-its-kind laboratory set up by Carl Zeiss in Singapore. It will house Zeiss' latest imaging equipment and optional beta tools for testing, which will be accessible to both NUS and Zeiss for the purposes of the collaborative activities.

NUS Deputy President (Research and Technology) Prof Barry Halliwell said: "NUS is always interested in working very closely with industry, particularly very high level industry that can allow us access to state-of-the-art equipment. We are very pleased that we can welcome Carl Zeiss on our campus because they are absolutely outstanding manufacturers of top quality technical equipment dealing with imaging and many other areas."

Slated to be operational in July this year, the Carl Zeiss Innovations Laboratory will be set up at the NUS Faculty of Engineering under NUSNNI-NanoCore.
