NYU@NUS: Dual LLM degree programme
for the global-minded

A PRESENCE IN NUS: NYU School of Law will collaborate with NUS in new dual degree programme, based in Singapore.

The NUS Faculty of Law and the New York University (NYU) School of Law are transforming the very concept of global legal education. They will be offering a new dual graduate degree programme in Singapore. Students from around the world can now experience two educational universes, earning Master of Laws (LLM) degrees from both a leading US institution and a leading Asian law school. The Programme opens in May 2007 and will admit 80 students for a start, increasing to about 150 in the future.

NUS Law Dean Tan Cheng Han said the Programme caters for the globally-minded who want to acquire proficiency in American law while developing an understanding of Asian law; or for those who recognise the importance of Asia and want to combine the rigour of an American law degree while acquiring proficiency in Asian law and institutions.

The NYU degree to be offered in Singapore will be called the LLM in Law and the Global Economy. Students will have a choice to either focus their studies in US and Asian Business and Trade Law or Justice and Human Rights. Students enrolled in the NYU@NUS Programme may also read courses towards the NUS LLM degree and can choose to focus their studies on Asian Law, Commercial Law, Intellectual Property and Technology Law or International Law.

Dean Richard L Revesz of NYU said: "Over a decade ago, we recognised that important changes in the way law was being practised required changes in the way it was taught. This led to the creation of our highly successful Hauser Global Law School Programme. Our partnership with NUS takes that insight to the next level."

Distinctive feature

The NYU degree taking place in Singapore will be taught predominantly by NYU Faculty in residence at NUS. In keeping with the global orientation of the NYU@NUS Programme, there will be collaborative teaching between NYU and NUS Faculties. Students will also be able to opt for internships with Singaporean and Asia-based law firms; as well as governmental and non-governmental agencies. After graduation, they may also choose to spend a further two months in New York, taking a special course in American Lawyering.
