29 June 2011

With effect from 1 July 2011, esteemed Singapore journalist Mr Janadas Devan will be Director of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), a think-tank within NUS' Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKY School). He will succeed Ambassador Ong Keng Yong who will become Singapore's new High Commissioner to Malaysia.

Mr Devan studied at the NUS and Cornell University in the United States, and had taught in various institutions in the US and Singapore before joining The Straits Times in 1997. He had served as leader writer, a columnist on public policy and language, and more recently as editor of the paper's op-ed pages. He will continue as an Associate Editor of The Straits Times.

Dean of LKY School Prof Kishore Mahbubani welcomed Mr Devan to his new appointment and paid tribute to Ambassador Ong for his outstanding service to IPS over the past three years. He expanded the Institute and integrated it into the School and the University. He leaves behind a stronger Institute.

Established in 1988, IPS seeks to cultivate clarity of thought, forward thinking and a big-picture perspective on issues of critical national interest through strategic deliberation and research. It studies the attitudes and aspirations of Singaporeans which have an impact on policy development and certain areas of diplomacy and international affairs.
