Alumni Awards 2007: Responding to the
call of the University
Keep a bond with the University… and respond to the call of the University, said President Nathan who was conferred the NUS Eminent Alumni Award on 5 July, for his distinguished service to Singapore and the University. Mr Nathan graduated with a Diploma in Social Work with Distinction in 1954.

NUS Chancellor since 1999, Mr Nathan’s vision for NUS is an institution that continues to aim for excellence in niche areas, and to impart knowledge to aspiring graduates. A strong alumni culture plays an important role in realising this vision, he said.
As an alumnus, Mr Nathan has zealously raised funds for the University's education and research. For example, under his patronage, the NUS Centennial Campaign launched in 2002 surpassed its goal of $100 million ahead of the Centennial celebrations in 2005. His personal appeal letter to fellow alumni for the launch of the University’s Annual Giving drive in 2005 in support of bursaries for needy undergraduates also helped raise about $1 million to assist many students.
Recalling his memorable times in NUS, Mr Nathan said: “There is one professor, whom I will not name. He was a young student, he ragged me. Now I am sure he regrets that. But it was all fun. I took it in the right spirit.”
Recognising excellence
Besides the Eminent Alumni Award which is awarded to alumni who have distinguished themselves by their significant contributions to Singapore, society and their professions, 20 other awards were presented. The Distinguished Alumni Service Award recognises excellence in alumni who contributed back to their alma mater; the Outstanding Young Alumni Awards for achievements and contributions of young alumni who have distinguished themselves nationally or internationally.
