NUS clinched the silver award at the Workplace Safety & Health Awards 2009

NUS won the silver award in the category of Workplace Safety & Health Performance Awards at the Workplace Safety and Health Awards 2009. It was presented by the Workplace Safety and Health Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower. NUS is the only institution of higher learning to have received this accolade.

NUS won for having achieved an injury rate of below 25 per cent of the industry average. The University also established a sound safety and health management system which was verified by an independent auditing firm.

Speaking at the awards ceremony held on 24 July 2009, Guest-of-Honour Minister for Manpower Mr Gan Kim Yong said: "We must continue in our efforts to build stronger capabilities to manage Workplace Safety and Health to ensure sustainable improvements in our safety standards."

"With the continued strong commitment by all stakeholders, such as that demonstrated by the award winners here today, I am confident that we can make Singapore safer and healthier, and put us on par with the best in the world with regard to Workplace Safety and Health," Mr Gan noted.

The Workplace Safety and Health Awards celebrate the best in workplace safety and health, recognising winners on a national level for their commitment and exemplary standards in Workplace Safety and Health. A total of 172 companies and individuals were recognised during the Awards this year.
