Amid joyous chatter and laughter, fresh graduates, faculty members, staff and alumni gathered for the Commencement Dinner, which rounded off the NUS Commencement 2012 on a high note. Gracing the 20 July occasion were Singapore President Dr Tony Tan Keng Kam and wife Mrs Mary Tan. This marked Dr Tan's first dinner in his capacity as NUS Chancellor.

Personifying NUS' culture of excellence and service, Dr Tan is a truly compelling role model for the university community, said NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan. This is exemplified by Dr Tan's spirit "of always striving to do better, of excelling not just through hard work but through innovations that differentiate what we do from others", as well as giving back to the wider community, said Prof Tan.

A graduate of the University of Singapore, Dr Tan emerged top of his class with a First Class Honours in Physics. He went on to serve Singapore in various capacities which included Cabinet Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and until recently, Chairman of the National Research Foundation.

"Keep ablaze the culture of excellence and service which has defined our alma mater for more than a century," Prof Tan told the class of 2012. He urged the fresh graduates to stay connected and wished them the very best for the future.

Held from 5 to 13 July, the NUS Commencement 2012 comprised 22 ceremonies where 9,913 graduates were conferred their degrees. Of these, 6,321 received bachelor degrees and 3,592 obtained higher degrees.
