NUS dragon boat teams sweep championship titles

02 July 2012

Some exhilarating actions and moments at the Singapore Dragon Boat Festival 2012

On 1 July, teamNUS Dragon Boat stormed the lanes at Bedok Reservoir to once again clinch both the men's and women's Prime Minister Challenge Trophies at the Singapore Dragon Boat Festival 2012. This is the second time that both the female and male NUS teams are champions for the challenge, beating fierce competition from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Institute of Management and Singapore Management University.

A premier race steeped in years of heritage, the Prime Minister Challenge Trophy is highly coveted among the four universities in Singapore. The women's team emerged triumphant for the third consecutive year, while the men's team took home the cup for the second year running. The double victory was made sweeter by the win in the Tertiary Mixed category the previous day - the first time ever that the NUS team has achieved such a feat.

Performances at previous competitions on the racing calendar showed that the other universities would put up a stiff fight for teamNUS' titles secured last year. However, the members rose to the challenge magnificently, putting in their full efforts and commitment for the gruelling weeks of intensive training leading up to the big day.

On the race day, the paddlers brought along their unwavering faith and unshakeable belief in one another, and never looked back once the air horn sounded. Cheered on by an exuberant crowd of NUS supporters, they rowed in perfect unison with One Heart, One Soul and One Stroke.

Charging ahead of all the other boats, the female team easily won the championship by a huge margin. On the other hand, the male race was a close fight, with three boats neck-to-neck towards the finishing line. At the last minute, teamNUS male dragon boaters summoned all their energy to make the final sprint and shot across the line. The crowds went wild at the exciting finish.

These historical wins underscore teamNUS Dragon Boat's indisputable might among the local dragon boat fraternity and set the bar for future races in the years to come.
