Singapore Youth Award for NUS researcher and Medal of Commendation for Duke-NUS researcher
NUS membrane-technology specialist, Dr Ng How Yong, won recognition for his achievements, receiving the Singapore Youth Award (SYA) 2008 (Science and Technology) while Dr Patrick Tan of Duke-NUS Medical School received the Medal of Commendation which honours those who have continued to attain higher levels of achievement and contribution to the society for at least five years after they received the Singapore Youth Award.

| MEMBRANE RESEARCH: Dr Ng How Yong |
Dr Ng, Division of Environmental Science & Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, was also awarded the Singapore Young Scientist Award by the Singapore National Academy of Science in 2007, and the Young Professionals Award by the International Water Association in 2006. He is well regarded for his research in membrane technology for water reuse and desalination, and alternative processes to produce energy from wastewater. His research achievements in microbial fuel cell technology for clean alternative energy production and membrane technology have been widely recognised.

Dr Patrick Tan was conferred the SYA for Science and Technology in 2002. As Group Leader of the Genome Institute of Singapore, Dr Tan has led his group to make significant contributions in areas of cancer genomics and infectious disease. As a pioneer faculty member of the Duke-NUS, he designed the basic science curriculum for Singapore's newest US-style medical school, playing an important role in charting the course of Singapore's medical education.
