Welcoming freshmen to the NUS community
04 Aug 2009
Students present at the Freshmen Inauguration Ceremony (FIC) at the University Cultural Centre were urged to explore, dream and discover as they embark on an exciting chapter in their lives. The ceremony, held on 3 August 2009, was the opportunity for the freshmen to be acquainted with Student Leaders and NUS Senior Management and Administrators.
"Today marks the start of your great adventure, a journey through the many worlds our University has opened for you. Along with the excitement and joy of this new beginning, I hope you will be passionate yet open, bold yet humble," said NUS President Prof Tan Chorh Chuan, who was a freshman himself at the NUS Faculty of Medicine thirty years ago. It is his inaugural FIC since his appointment as the University's President.
In his speech, Prof Tan highlighted the many academic pathways available at NUS such as the overseas exchange programme, double-degree programmes with prestigious partner universities or within NUS itself, and gaining an entrepreneurship experience via the NUS Overseas College. He also encouraged students to contribute to the NUS community through activities outside the classroom.
This was echoed by President of the NUS Students' Union (NUSSU) Mr Kuan Yee Han. Yee Han shared with the freshmen the many activities and clubs under NUSSU and urged fellow students to make the most of their time in NUS. He later presented the Student Leaders to the freshmen and led them through the University Pledge.
During the FIC, the freshmen caught a glimpse of the vibrant campus life through the performances from the Cultural Activities Club Acapella-Resonance and Jazztitude, Temasek Hall's Imprompt-3 Temasek Hall and NUS Capoiera.
