Thrilling and exhilarating performances put up by students from the halls of residences, schools and faculties kept the audience enthralled throughout the event. Gracing the Rag Day were Guest-of-Honour Singapore President and NUS Chancellor Dr Tony Tan Keng Kam, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, NUS Provost and Deputy President (Academic Affairs) Professor Tan Eng Chye and the university senior administrators.
Themed EXcandescent or glowing with passion, the event aims to show appreciation to the public for their donations on Flag Day three days earlier. This year, more than S$460,000 was raised. The proceeds will benefit 20 beneficiaries under the Community Chest, including the Autism Children's Centre (Simei), Bright Hill Evergreen Home and Rotary Family Service Centre.
Expressing his thanks to the participants, NUSSU President Ang Yu Qian said: "The annual NUSSU Rag and Flag unites the NUS student community in the spirit of giving back to society. Rag and Flag is a rite of passage for all NUS freshmen and the process is an avenue to forge ties that bind."
Through the annual Rag and Flag Day, NUS has raised more than S$4.3 million in the past 10 years. Since 2003, the University has been receiving the Community Chest Special Events Gold or Plantinum Awards every year for its fund-raising endeavours.
