NUS undergraduate shines at inaugural tri-university Business Schools debate at Discover Europe Fair 2009

Mr Marcus Lim Tao Shien, a third-year NUS student reading a double degree in law and business, won the Best Speaker award at the inaugural tri-university business schools debate at the Discover Europe Fair 2009. Marcus, together with team members Mr Jonathan Koh of the Singapore Management University and Mr Hendrik Clüver of the Nanyang Business School, also emerged winner in the group category. The debate delved on the topic of whether corporate social responsibility was the key to a competitive European Union.

For his win on the Best Speaker award, Marcus was granted a S$1,500 stipend and secured an internship at Banyan Tree Holdings resorts. In the group category, Marcus and his team mates received S$1,200 from the EU Centre in Singapore. The runner-up team led by NUS student Ms Caroline Ng, who is pursuing a concurrent degree in Business Administration (Honours) and Masters in Science (Management), was awarded S$300 in book vouchers.

The debate was moderated by Chairperson of the Banyan Tree Global Foundation, Ms Claire Chiang, and the judging panel comprised the Head of the Delegation of the European Commission (EC) to Singapore, His Excellency Holger Standertskjöld; Chief Financial Officer of the Wholesale Banking Asia, ING Bank NV, Mr Tan Choon Seng and Deputy General Manager, Corporate Affairs & Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, City Developments Limited, Ms Esther An.

The annual Discover Europe Fair is organised by the Delegation of the EC to Singapore in partnership with the European Union (EU) Centre in Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, the European Chamber of Commerce in Singapore and the EU Member States. The fair aims to promote Europe’s cultural and economic significance to undergraduates in Singapore.
