MINDEF partners NUS for Temasek Research Fellowship scheme

26 Oct 2009

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with NUS and Nanyang Technological University on 22 October 2009 for the establishment of the Temasek Research Fellowship, a three-year post-doctoral research fellowship for outstanding researchers to conduct defence technology research at NUS. The MOU was signed by MINDEF Chief Defence Scientist and Chief Research and Technology Officer Mr Quek Tong Boon and NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost Prof Tan Eng Chye.

Said Prof Tan Eng Chye: "NUS has a long-standing partnership with the Ministry of Defence. The Temasek Fellowship at NUS further leverages on our complementary strengths in science and engineering to expand the pool of indigenous defence scientists and engineers, while fostering innovation in defence R&D."

"The Fellowship is an excellent initiative to groom outstanding young researchers who had shown great potential to spearhead ground-breaking research that could lead to critical defence applications that strengthen Singapore's defence and national security," he noted.

Researchers would be conducting research in the areas of science and technology which include Advanced Materials, Cognitive Sciences, Cyber Security and Electromagnetics. Other research areas might be introduced in subsequent years.

Partnerships between MINDEF and the local universities and research institutes have resulted in several joint projects which contributed significantly to the development of key technological capabilities in the third Generation Singapore Armed Forces.
