NUS' Faculty of Engineering conferred the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award on Singapore Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, at the Engineering Alumni Gala Dinner held on 20 October 2010.

Instituted in 1989, the Award recognises engineering alumni who have distinguished themselves nationally or internationally through their excellent and sustained contributions and achievements in public and community service, entrepreneurship, or in a profession or scholarly field.

Dr Yaacob, Civil Engineering Class of 1980, is an inspiration to all engineering students and alumni. He completed his PhD studies at Stanford University and after a stint at Cornell University as a post-doctoral fellow, he returned to Singapore in 1990 to join NUS. He served in the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering as an Associate Professor till 1998. In 1997, he co-founded the Centre for Robust Design, which undertook research into reliability issues relating to products and processes of industries in Singapore.

He has been active in community service since his school days and has been involved with the Association of Muslim Professionals, Jamiyah, Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura and the Nature Society. Among other achievements and contributions, Dr Yaacob as Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, has helped Singapore secure a reliable and resilient water supply through the development of the "Four National Taps" - water from local catchment areas, imported water, reclaimed water and desalinated water.

At the Gala Dinner, Dr Yaacob also launched a commemorative book Singapore's Engineer-Leaders: Partnership with the Nation to mark the Faculty of Engineering's 55th Anniversary. The book written by historian Dr Edwin Lee documents the growth and development of the Faculty since its inception in 1955.

The Faculty also launched a new award this year, the "Engineering Alumni Service Honours", which was presented to Mr Gan Cheng Chian and Mr Keith Kee Keah Poh at the Dinner.
