Honoured at the Student Achievement Awards 2009
03 Nov 2009
NUS recognised individual students and student groups at its annual Student Achievement Awards 2009. These students are given recognition for their outstanding achievements inactivities outside the academic curriculum and for bringing honour to the University. This year saw 21 outstanding individuals and 39 exceptional student groups receiving the Awards on 30 October 2009.
Commending the recipients, NUS President Prof Tan Chorh Chuan said: “We recognise the outstanding accomplishments of individuals and student groups who have uncovered their interests and taken full advantage of the wide range of learning opportunities beyond the classroom.” Prof Tan added that each of the recipients has maximised the opportunities to work boldly and with passion towards their personal goals.
Said third-year medical student Cheong May Anne who won in the Community Projects category: “For me, community work is like a recreational activity. It is fun volunteering with friends and getting to know others outside school. Sometimes it is tough, especially when things clash with exams and you feel very stretched, but at the end of the day, it's all worth the while.” Ms Cheong is the President of the University-YMCA@NUS and she led the Uni-Y club on Youth Expedition trips to Cambodia and Vietnam, giving English lessons and carrying out reconstruction projects. She is also a member of the NUS Medical Society and a volunteer with YMCA Singapore.
