WINNING DESIGN: Objects Around the Tablescape created by NUS’ School of Design and Environment won the Design of the Year Award

The Objects Around the Tablescape collection from d.lab, a commercial entity and trademark created by the Design Incubation Centre, Division of Industrial Design at the School of Design and Environment, NUS, was among the winners of this year’s President’s Design Award 2010. The Award is the highest accolade conferred on an individual or organisation in the field of design in Singapore.

Administered by the DesignSingapore Council of the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, and Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), the Award has two categories – Designer of the Year and Design of the Year. Two individuals and nine companies have respectively been conferred the awards by Singapore President His Excellency Mr S R Nathan on 19 November 2010.

In the jury citation for Objects Around the Tablescape, it was noted that the collection shows “an exciting, new, unique, twenty-first century design ethos made physical.” It was added that the “bold steel and timber table lamps demonstrate exquisite metal-folding details with unnerving authority. Simple serving plates milled from solid stone-filled acrylic possess and eerily generous mass for such visually weightless forms. Weight, form and surface finishes are combined in unlikely ratios to continually delight and confound the user.”

Mr Patrick Chia, Director of the Design Incubation Centre, shared that the collection was developed through a material exploration workshop under his design direction. “The first collection in Corian® was designed and manufactured in Singapore by the Design Incubation Centre’s team of designers as well as NUS’ Industrial Design Programme students and alumni contributors,” he said.

Explaining how d.lab’s fabrication processes for the products is unique, Mr Chia said: “The second and third collection explored materials such as SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) Nylon, fibre reinforced plastic, maple and balau wood while the recent fourth collection introduced two new materials in the collection – copper and Delrin®.”

The collection is available for sale at P5 on 5 Purvis Street. Previously, The Objects Around the Tablescape collection has garnered press and retailer interest, having been featured in leading design magazines such as Intramuros (France), Case da Abitare (Italy) and Vogue (Australia). It has also stood out from among the 3,000 exhibitors at Maison & Objet exhibition in Paris for the last three years.

The curated exhibition of the award winning works is being held from 20 November to 5 December 2010 at Ion Orchard. Thereafter, visitors can view the works at The URA Centre.
