In conjunction with its 25th Anniversary celebration, Singapore Neuroscience Association (SNA) held a one-day neuroscience symposium on 26 April at the Centre for Life Sciences, NUS.

SNA President Associate Professor S T Dheen, who is with the NUS Department of Anatomy, welcomed the participants and briefly highlighted the history of SNA. Associate Professor Gavin Dawe, Secretary of the Association from the Department of Pharmacology, unveiled a book entitled 25 years of Journey to commemorate the silver anniversary.

Associate Professor Yeoh Khay Guan, Dean of NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, was the Guest-of-Honour. In his speech, he congratulated SNA for its sustained growth and contributions to the neuroscience community in Singapore. He encouraged neuroscientists to continue their good work in studying neurological disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease as these complex disorders are particularly pertinent in an increasingly ageing population.

Assoc Prof Yeoh further pointed out that research on neurological disorders has gained global importance with President Barack Obama's recent announcement of a US$100-million Brain Initiative to explore the mysteries of the human brain.

The event culminated with the following NUS researchers and educators receiving SNA Awards for their contribution to neuroscience:
  • Distinguished Neuroscientist Award: Associate Professor Samuel Tay Sam Wah (Department of Anatomy)
  • Outstanding Woman in Neuroscience Research in Singapore: Professor Charanjit Kaur (Department of Anatomy)
  • Excellence in Neuroscience Research Award: Associate Professor Soong Tuck Wah (Department of Physiology)
  • Excellence in Neuroscience Research Award: Assoc Prof Ong Wei Yi (Department of Anatomy)
  • Neuroscience Educator Award: Associate Professor Sanjay Khanna (Department of Physiology)
  • Neuroscience Educator Award: Associate Professor Ng Yee Kong (Department of Anatomy)
