Graduating students show off socially conscious designs

Students from the NUS Division of Industrial Design (DID) showcased their graduation work at Singapore's National Library recently. The creative projects ranged from far-sighted innovations to practical solutions set in the context of a societal environment.

Guest-of-Honour Mr Jeffrey Ho, Executive Director of DesignSingapore Council, kicked off the exhibition which was open to the public.

In his welcome address, Head of DID Associate Professor Yen Ching Chiuan congratulated the students on their graduation. He highlighted the Division's missions and objectives, including the focus on social concerns to improve society; student exchange programmes and internships to gain international perspectives; as well as the realisation of students' concepts through licensing of intellectual property rights to the industry.

Following the ceremony, Assoc Prof Yen and Professor Heng Chye Kiang, Dean of the NUS School of Design and Environment, accompanied guests around the exhibits. The students presented their design projects interactively to highlight the innovativeness of their work.

Among the exhibits were a patent-pending "Sippy Tippee" design which quells children's fear of consuming medication; a wearable mobility aid that caters to the elderly with mild mobility challenges; and "Lullabye" which seeks to bond transnational mothers and their children through a pair of complementary audio devices.

The opening ceremony culminated in a performance by two graduating students, who expressed their feelings through an original song about their tough four-year course and the strong sense of togetherness among the classmates.
