New Chinese Ambassador visits NUS

China’s new Ambassador to Singapore His Excellency Duan Jielong paid a courtesy call on NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan on 2 August 2013. He was accompanied by Counsellor for Education Mr Yu Yunfeng and Third Secretary Mr Zhang Xiangrong.

HE Duan and his delegation were warmly welcomed by Prof Tan together with Associate Professor Anne Pakir, Director of NUS’ International Relations Office and Mr Koh Chin Yee, Director (Asia) from Office of the Vice President (University & Global Relations).

Prof Tan shared on the major transformations in NUS through the years and some initiatives it made to position itself as a global university while building expertise in Asia. HE Duan praised Singapore’s bilingual policy for providing links to the outside world.

Other topics they discussed included deep research partnership with China and NUS programmes catering to Chinese students and leaders such as the University’s Master in Public Administration programme, Student Exchange Programme and Programme for Leadership in University Management.

Prior to his latest appointment announced in July 2013, HE Duan was Consul-General (Ambassadorial Rank) of China in Sydney, Australia, from 2010 to 2013 and Director-General, Department of Treaty and Law of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2010.
