The concerted fundraising efforts of some 6,000 NUS students resulted in more than $415,700 raised at this year’s NUS Students' Union (NUSSU) Flag Day held on 6 August.

The proceeds will benefit 19 charity programmes supported by the Community Chest. Among them were family service centres, an autism school, Rainbow Centres catering to children with special needs, Lions Befrienders reaching out to senior citizens, as well as a MINDS training and development centre for the intellectually disabled.

Members of the public can still pledge their online donations till 31 August 2013 at http://tinyurl.com/klqv2sg.

Since 2000, NUS students have raised more than $6 million in donations for its beneficiaries through the annual NUSSU Flag Day. For their efforts, they have been receiving the Community Chest Special Events Gold or Platinum Awards on an annual basis since 2003.

NUSSU President Mr Goh Ren Kai said: “While celebrating our traditions and heritage, NUSSU Rag and Flag also aims to promote the spirit of giving back to the society amongst NUS Students. NUSSU hopes to emphasise empathy and compassion for others as fundamental guiding values for the NUS Community.”

A tradition since 1958, NUSSU Rag and Flag is a signature NUS event that unites the entire University community. Students from the NUS Halls of Residence as well as Faculty Clubs will be actively involved. On Flag Day, the students will approach members of the public for donations in aid of the needy or less privileged. Rag Day, which is essentially celebrated as a show of appreciation to the public for their generous donations, will feature a colourful repertoire of performances and displays.

To heighten the excitement and commend the students for their labour of love, the presentations on Rag Day as well as fundraising efforts on Flag Day were also judged competitively.
