NUS Law Faculty to Host and Co-Teach Prestigious World Trade Organisation Regional Trade Policy Course

The National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Law Faculty has been selected by the World Trade Organization (WTO) to be its partner institution to host the Regional Trade Policy Course (RTPC) in Asia from 2007.  NUS beat stiff competition from other universities from Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan to win the bid.

The 12-week course, to be held at the Faculty’s new premises at Bukit Timah, will provide intensive training in WTO law and policy for trade officials from the Asia-Pacific region.  Academics from the Law Faculty will partner WTO staff and other Asian experts to co-teach the course.  The Asian RTPC is largely modeled after the Trade Policy Course which is held annually in Geneva at the WTO, but will provide a greater regional emphasis on trade issues.  The Law Faculty already offers a number of WTO-related courses to its undergraduate and graduate students.  The RTPC in Singapore will leverage on NUS’ expertise on Asia and trade, and its strong links with regional universities.

The course, which is expected to be hosted in Singapore for three years, forms the first phase of a two-phase cooperative relationship with WTO to build trade capacity in the region.  The second phase will see longer-term collaborative programmes between the Faculty and the WTO.  The cooperation underscores the Faculty’s commitment to build capacity in trade law in Asia.
