NUS Students Raised More than $460,000 for Charity

Students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) raised more than $460,000 at the NUS Students' Union (NUSSU) Flag Day held on 7 August 2012. This was officially announced today at the 54th NUSSU Rag Day held at the NUS Kent Ridge Campus.

On NUSSU Flag Day, about 5,000 freshmen and seniors from NUS spread themselves island-wide to raise funds from members of the public. The proceeds will benefit the following 20 beneficiaries under the Community Chest:-

  3. Autism Children's Centre (Simei)
  4. Canossian School
  5. MINDS Towner Gardens School
  6. APSN Centre for Adults
  7. SAMH Oasis Day Centre
  8. SPD-SOKA Day Activity Centre
  9. MINDS Woodlands Employment Development Centre
  10. SUN-DAC Centre for the Disabled II - Choa Chu Kang
  11. New Horizon Centre (Toa Payoh)
  12. AWWA READYCARE Centre
  13. Bright Hill Evergreen Home
  14. Hospice Day Care Centre
  15. PERTAPIS Senior Citizens Fellowship Home
  16. As-Salaam PPIS Family Support Centre
  17. Bukit Ho Swee Family Service Centre
  18. Fei Yue Family Service Centre (Yew Tee)
  19. Hougang Sheng Hong Family Service Centre
  20. Rotary Family Service Centre

Over the ten years from 2003 to 2012, NUS students have raised more than $4.3 million for its beneficiaries through their annual Rag & Flag event. For their efforts, they had been receiving the Community Chest Special Events Gold or Platinum Awards on an annual basis since 2003.

NUSSU President Mr Ang Yu Qian said, "The annual NUSSU Rag and Flag unites the NUS student community in the spirit of giving back to society. Rag and Flag is a rite of passage for all NUS freshmen and the process is an avenue to forge ties that bind. Rag stands for receiving and giving - we hope to spread the passion and spirit of NUS students to everyone. I would also like to thank all participants for their effort and unwavering support."

EXcandescent Performance by NUS Students at NUSSU Rag Day 2012

The annual NUSSU Rag Day, which showcases the creative talents of NUS students in float-building and show-stopping performances, depicts the University's appreciation towards the public for their generous donations during the NUSSU Flag Day.

Themed EXcandescent, or glowing with passion, NUSSU Rag Day 2012 features 14 floats constructed by students out of recycled materials, as well as stunning dance choreographies, to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of the NUS spirit.

About NUSSU Rag and Flag

A tradition started in 1958, Rag and Flag is a signature NUS event that unites the entire NUS community. Students from NUS Halls of Residence, as well as the Faculty Clubs will participate in this annual event. On Flag Day, NUS students approach members of the public for donations in aid of the beneficiaries. Stunning performances and spectacular floats are exhibited on Rag Day, celebrated after Flag Day as a show of appreciation to the public for their contributions to the under-privileged.
